Monday, March 7. The Latest News in Ukraine Today:
- On the 12th day of the battle for Ukraine, Russia continues to threaten the country with an imminent invasion by sea. Today, its soldiers attacked the Olvia seaport near Mykolaiv, as reported by Ukraine’s Ministry of Infrastructure. The terminal in question was being rented by a Qatar company.
- Over the weekend, from their ship in the Black Sea, Russian troops also launched several rockets at the international airport in the city of Vinnytsia — a normally peaceful region in central Ukraine.
- Much evil is going on in the country as Putin continues his unrelenting campaign of terror. Shortly after agreeing to a ceasefire and to open humanitarian corridors in occupied territories, Russian forces opened fire indiscriminately at civilians attempting to leave. This was later confirmed by several reports. Putin is also attempting to force Ukrainian leaders into accepting humanitarian corridors that lead to Russia and Belarus exclusively. Most recently, the move was claimed to be in direct response to a request from French President Emmanuel Macron, an allegation the Élysée Palace vehemently denies.
- Following a number of other companies, American freelancing marketplace Upwork has also announced its own immediate boycott over the Russian Ukraine invasion. According to company president and CEO Hayden Brown, “Upwork will be suspending operations in Russia and Belarus.”
- The people of Ukraine continue to show remarkable resilience, as many restaurants in Kyiv have started offering free meals to city defenders.
- Russia has made multiple attempts to disrupt Ukrainian mobile connectivity. So in order to prevent this, the country’s mobile operators have united, enabling national roaming between all operators.
- An 11 year old from Zaporizhzhia travelled across the country to escape the Ukraine conflicts and meet his relatives in Bratislava, Slovakia. His mother — a widow, and a carer for her own 84-year-old mother — was forced to send him away on an evacuation train.
Why is Russia attacking Ukraine?
Putin claims that this "special operation" was needed to protect Ukraine’s Russian-speaking population. But what language do people speak in Ukraine anyway? In actuality, while Russian is spoken by approximately a third of the Ukrainian people, it is Ukrainian that firmly prevails with ⅔ of the country being native speakers. Furthermore, since these latest attacks, many Russian speakers have switched exclusively to Ukrainian.
